Team Fortress 2/Source Engine Update Released
December 20, 2007, 2:44 pm - Jason Ruymen

Updates to Team Fortress 2 and the Source Engine have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The specific changes include:

Team Fortress 2
* Sudden Death mode is now a server option (a convar) and defaults to OFF
* Sapped buildings now take slightly less damage from the Spy who sapped them
* The Medic’s Medigun now charges at an increased rate during Setup time, to remove the need for self-damage grinding
* Fixed an rcon/console command that could cause server crashes
* Prevented players from playing the “civilian” class
* Prevented players from hiding their name in the scoreboard
* Fixed exploit where the Medigun UberCharge wouldn’t drain if you switched weapons
* Fixed decals not being correctly applied to the world in some cases
* Fixed critical bullet tracers not being visible to players other than the firer
* Fixed first person spectator view of the Spy watch not showing the correct cloak value
* Fixed the teleporter’s player shaped particles not drawing
* Fixed the flamethrower stuttering when firing directly into a building
* Fixed a rare crash that can happen when a player being healed leaves the server suddenly
* Fixed rocket trail effects sometimes existing permanently in world
* Added effects to players when they earn an achievement, visible to other players nearby
* Tweaked achievement HUD fonts and color palette for more readability
* Improved stat gathering for map play times to increase accuracy
* Improved stat gathering around draws to better understand why they’re occurring
* Fixed occasional misreporting of syringe gun & fireaxe damage distances to the stats system
* Fixed an occasional crash caused by an achievement not being found during a game announcement

Dustbowl
* Now waits until either team wins fully before changing to another map on server timelimit expiring
* Teams now score a point per captured control point, rather than per sub round
* Prevented Demomen being able to launch grenades into the stage three alleys while standing at the final cap point
* Fixed gaps in stage gates that allowed snipers to kill defenders during setup
* Fixed several model and brush perch exploits in stage three
* Added stair access to the upper area in stage three after the first cap
* Limited line-of-sight at the first control point in stage 3 to remove a griefable sniper spot

Source Engine
* Fixed some audio buffer support issues with Vista
* WorldVertexTransition under dxlevel 80 + 81 now correctly uses vertex alpha to blend the two textures
* Improved the console in the graphical UI version of the dedicated server

SourceTV
* Relay proxies can now record demos now with tv_autorecord 1
* Fixed an interpolation code bug during demo playback that was resulting in view jitter
* Added several TF specific game events to SourceTV auto director logic
* Increased the average shot length by 2 seconds

Some of you may know about it and some not, but this is a very fun trick to use in jump maps such as skyscraper/slide. This trick is completed with a medic and an engineer using the needle gun. Here are the steps you need to follow in order:

1. Engineer builds dispenser
2. Engineer then jumps on top of dispenser
3. Medic(s) crowd around dispenser
4. Engineer jumps repeatedly
5. Medic(s) shoot syringes at engineers feet

NOTE: 3 and 4 can go in either order.

This will get the engineer to places he was not meant to be! It also gives him the ability to build teleporter’s and other structure’s!

QUICK TIP:
If you want the engineer to go straight up, shoot at his feet from directly below him. If you want the engineer to go forward/backward, shoot at him in the opposite direction you want him to go from a distance. This can be tricky, but if you master it, you can shoot engineers all over the map!

UPDATE:
This works on any class, it just requires the user to be high enough over the medic to complete the boost. You can try this with a soldier after rocket jumping, or a demoman after sticky jumping.

I just discovered this great group of developers that are putting together a MOD that uses the idea of the original RATS, but even better. It’s called Toy Soldiers and here is the concept:

TF2: Toy Soldiers Mod, will be available in two formats. The Basic version will be in a form of a mappack, containing all the maps and you will be able to run it on a stock game server. The Complete version will include a refined mappack and a highly modified version of the game, a full installer and (hopefully) a self-updater will be available. The purpose of this mod is to go farther than any of the rat maps you’ve played before. The basic concept of this first release, will be a map for each of the rooms in a house, have them all tied in so you feel like you are just going into the next room, and not from one style map, to another. Most rat maps have a typical scale of about 1/10 or 1/12, i’m pushing this even further, due to the abilities that the orangebox engine has provided.

- Toy Soldier MOD

Do you have an older computer and would like for your TF2 to run super smooth? I came across this great application on the Steam forums that allows you to run a program that changes settings you normally couldn’t through TF2 options. Here is the post by VenomGameworld.

Hi all,

For people with older PC’s, I’ve programmed a tweaker application. It allows you to alter settings that aren’t shown in the options menu to increase performance without losing much of the graphical quality (e.g. texture rendering options remain unchanged).

All tweaks are divided into 4 different categories and can be selected or deselected (and thus won’t be applied).

If you are not satisfied about the tweaks, you can easily remove ‘em via the program.

IMPORTANT: Team Fortress 2 Tweaker requires .NET Framework 2.0

I hope you enjoy it!

Screenshot
Download
.NET Framework 2.0

Here is a full description from the official homepage, 1337.gameworldonline.be.

This Team Fortress 2 Tweaker is based upon the ET: Quake Wars Tweaker and is thus much alike, but now I’ve paid more attention to the lay-out and the number of tweaks is also larger. They are grouped in 4 categories, going from Graphics to Physics. As always, I’ve chosen the tweaks very carefully so the increase of performance doesn’t go at the cost of graphical quality.

Before making any changes, it creates a back-up of your current configuration. This Tweaker even allows you to modify your tweaked settings again if you’re not satisfied. Remember: this program only tweaks settings that aren’t found in-game (aside from disabling shadows), so you can always disable some items yourself in the game menus to further increase performance.

Also, don’t forget this application requires .NET Framework.

The full description can be found at: 1337.gameworldonline.be/tf2tweaker.php

I’ve noticed many people complaining about the OS Memory Pool LOW issue on the steam forums and no one really helping them resolve it. So, I found a great tutorial and decided to list it here for everyone. Check it out:

Open the registry editor. That’s done by going to Run, then type in “regedit.”

In the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management

Double click on “PagedPoolSize”. Hexadecimal is listed first. Change the “Value Data” to one of these below:
Note: You only need to enter EITHER Hexadecimal or Decimal. They both are the same.

Code:
Megabytes Hexadecimal Decimal
192Mb 0c000000 201326592
256Mb 10000000 268435456
384Mb 18000000 402653184

You do not need anything bigger than 400Mb… in most cases 300Mb is too much as well. The bigger the number, the more memory you devote to the Paged Pool.

Once you are done, make sure you reboot your computer.

I found this video after a little research and realized, it is possible as an Engineer to build on top of moving trains in cp_well. All you have to do is jump down on the moving train and build as you are on top of it. Your structure will be built in the air with nothing below it. Here is a video:

Unfortunately, once the next train passes by, your structure is destroyed. But it was funny to see a floating sentry right?
